What is Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation?
Phakic intraocular lenses are lenses implanted inside the eye without removing the natural lens that a person is born with. So, then, the question arises: What are the lenses implanted during cataract surgery? These are known as pseudophakic intraocular lenses. In cataract surgeries, the natural lens is removed because it has lost its transparency, and a pseudophakic lens is implanted into the empty lens capsule. Fakik intraocular lenses are manufactured with technical features that differ from lenses used for cataracts. Fakik lenses are thinner, transparent lenses designed not to harm the natural, non-cataractous lens; they can only be inserted while the natural lens is present. Fakik lenses can be placed in different regions within the eye through a very small, folded or rolled microincision. We can examine phakic intraocular lenses in two main groups as stated below:
