The 6-year-old female patient, Irina, presented to our hospital with complaints of abdominal swelling noticed by her family over the past few weeks, and occasional abdominal pain. The patient's general condition was found to be good, but a palpable mass was detected in the right abdominal region.During the physical examination and subsequent ultrasonography, a mass originating from the right kidney was detected; therefore, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging was performed for further evaluation. Based on the obtained findings, a preliminary diagnosis of Wilms tumor (nephroblastoma) was considered in the patient.

The patient responded well to the treatment, and surgical intervention was performed at the scheduled time at Hisar Hospital, successfully removing the tumorous renal tissue. The postoperative pathology report confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient's treatment was continued with adjuvant chemotherapy. Medistate Kavacık Hospital, Prof. Dr. Betül Tavil underwent autologous stem cell transplantation, an advanced treatment method using the patient's own stem cells. This method has been particularly employed in certain hematological diseases and cancer types to reconstruct the bone marrow following high-dose chemotherapy. The treatment process begins with the collection of stem cells from the patient. While the collected stem cells are stored under special conditions, high-dose chemotherapy is administered to the patient to largely eliminate the diseased cells.

Following this stage, the stored stem cells are returned to the patient to enable the bone marrow to produce healthy cells again. The most significant advantage of autologous stem cell transplantation is that since the patient's own cells are used, there is no risk of tissue incompatibility (rejection). This approach enhances treatment safety and reduces the risk of complications. The patient, who was in good general condition and whose clinical and laboratory findings were stable, responded positively to treatment and was discharged to Bulgaria with a full recovery.
